Today, for the first time, I ate organic celery. My-oh-my, what a difference! I expect celery to not-taste-like-much. ("Subtle", it's called in polite circles). But THIS stuff... it had a strong taste!
Was it good? Did I like it? I'm not sure... you see, I was distracted... there was a problem, the celery was causing a problem. I wasn't sure at first, perhaps it was unrelated to the celery, perhaps it was my fault (operator error, incorrect celery consumption), so I performed some tests, and... it was the celery. Problematic celery. Celery with an attitude.
The celery made my tongue go numb. It's true. I googled it, and this is (apparently) a known problem. Others have experienced this.

That's weird, because my mouth does that even when I eat regular vegetables. Seriously. I can't eat a lot of fruits and vegetables because I have an allergic reaction to them. My whole mouth goes itchy, and then numb. Weird.
Wow, numbing celery. Vegetables must be different on your side of the pond. Although, we don't put rocks in our peanut butter over here, either. :-)
Geez. Numbing celery, eh? See? Good reason right there not to eat rabbit food! LOL J/K I love fresh vegetables. I've never heard of this before though. Could it be related to that pebble you found in your sandwich?
about the celery....... I am convinced its the chemicals they use on most of our veggies. Its the residue of those poisons that we put into our unsuspecting innards... and that's what causes the burning sensation you are talking about... and of course it is not just celery, I can think of very many others that give me the same reaction... particularly those delightful red sweet peppers. They are the very worsed of the bunch. When I looked it up on the comp I read that red sweet peppers have the highest amount of pesticide residue. Something to think about.
and........... they say to wash your fruit and veggies well before eating. But that is not the answer. By the time it reaches the consumer, namely poor unsuspecting us, the pesticide has been incorporated into the tissues of the fruit/vegtb and therefore can't be scrubbed away. And that is what causes the unpleasant sensation.
Might I be right?

The celery was certified organic (in the UK), which, I believe, if fairly strict. Pesticides are not forbidden under the 'organic' banner, but their use is minimzed.

As far as peppers go, I've heard the same thing, that which you describe.
......... even if the produce you bought was grown without pesticides, there is still the problem of 'drifting' from neighboring fields. The law calls for a certain distance that must be adhered to where pesticides are introduced into a growing crop to prevent this 'drifting' effect into neighboring lands... but there again... that is something that is hard to control.
Remember the controversy about those fields of rape seed... and the 'drifting'?
But now we are getting away from pesticide... sorry.

Yeah, I do remember the issue, I'd forgotten it was rape seed, but, yes, I remember now.
My basic argument goes like this: I've eaten celery many, many times in my forty-one years, but I'd never experienced the numbing tongue before... so I ask myself, was there anything else 'unique' or noteworthy about my celery-eating on 12 December 2005? Well, yes, two things-
1) the celery was certified organic
and
2) it was flavourful
It was these datums from which I concluded that "real" celery tastes like something (as opposed to tasting like nothing), and... makes my tongue go numb.
Why might this be the case? There is a (naturally-occurring) chemical in celery called 3-n butyl phthalide, which aids in blood vessel dilation (or so I've read...)
So, if the celery is more 'natural', (a big "if") perhaps it has a higher concentration of 3-n butyl phthalide, and Lord only knows how this pile of watery biochemistry in action that I call "Me" will respond.
I would not try to claim that I'm-right-and-you're-wrong, I'm just making the case.

I've actually read, years ago, that there is something in celery that folks can react to. There were several accounts of people actually fainting after eating celery. Most of those accounts were after people had just engaged in some activity, like running, and then had a bunch of celery.
Of course, as an idealistic college student, I immediately went out and purchased a few pounds of celery, hoping to get that celery high I'd read about. Sadly, all I did was eat my vegetables. I didn't tell my mom.
...and fainting would probably be a result of getting too much of that 3-n butyl phthalide in your system, especially after you've been running all over the place.

well, yes, excessive bloodvessel dilation could do some odd things, or so I would think, and particularly if one had also indulged in a handfull of raw carrot sticks at the same time, which reportedly are known to widen coronary arteries... so it goes on. Sounds much safer to stick to P.and J. sandwiches, even with the occasional white pebble thrown in. Just don't bite down too hard.
..now why didn't I think of chocolates?

hey you're not the only one. i noticed it a couple of years ago and it does it with regular and organic celery. don't know what the deal is; allergy or common reaction?
I have been trying to research the reason why celery can make my mouth numb, and I'm convinced it's a compound called Eugenol. This is the active ingredient in Clove Oil, and is used in temporary dental fillings to deaden the nerve pain of a cavity. The numbness that we experience from celery might be due to the numbing effects of Eugenol on your tounge.
The only thing I cant' figure out is why is it not everytime? It only happens to me occasionally. We could try to pay attention to what is different in each bunch of celery. (color maybe?)

Auntiedd--if you are still reading, I suspect that celery (as with most forms of life, even though selectively bred) has variation in most traits. So some celery will grow taller, some will grow stringier, and some will produce more Eugenol than others. What's most interesting to me is how few of us seem to detect its presence through just eating a bit of it. Maybe everyone reacts if they have a pint of it juiced!
